It all started out well of course. I was at the american girl place with stephenswodadancer and we were picking out dolls. She bought kanani, and being crazed by the doll's beauty, I did too. I opened up the box. Inside was a huge stash of clothes and doll sized knick knacks, along with the doll herself. Kanani.
I was thrilled. What an wonderful thing, to be shopping with stephenswodadancer, and buy a kanani for myself! I felt rich.
So, I walked out the door of the american girl place, waving goodbye to sarah and the smiling dolls on the shelfs. The doll box felt perfectly heavy under my arm. Outside, I met my dad. He handed me another rectangle box, and I sank to the ground to open it. Underneath the scarlett lid, two gleaming eyes stared up at me. It was another doll.
Of course I was ecastic. I ripped the lid off and gave my dad a big hug. It was the just like you with short red hair, freckles and green eyes, and my father had thought to pick her out for me! I grabbed the two boxed under my arms.
And suddenly I was at my house. But that is the way dreams work, right? Not everything is always physically possible.
My warm little home had changed though. it was a huge gray house now, with floors stretching to the distance in the most boring cream colored carpet. I had all my dolls in my hands. I wanted to get upstairs to tuck them into their warm little beds, under their quilted blankets, in their little house. I started to climb the cream carpeted stairs. The walls were whitewashed, and I could feel the gloomyness hanging in the air, there seemed to be no windows.
Suddenly, I slipped.
I caught myself and realized that the stairs were crumbling behind me. And even worse, I felt the soft body slip from my grip, and sonali was being swallowed into the rubble of the smashed steps. They cracks in the carpet were climbing. I tried to reach for sonali, but it was to late, her body was swallowed, and all that stared up at me were her pleading eyes. I felt a rumble. I did'nt have much time. Swallowing hard, I barrelled up the stairs.
I could hear the rumbling and crashing behind me as I ascended the steps. It was gaining closer every minute, but the staircase never seemed to end. My eyes scoured the gloom. And felicity's trusty grip upon my arm gave way. She was tumbling behind me, I could see the flash of her red hair streaming into the darkness. Gone. Just like that. As I continued climbing, I clutched the precious bodies of my dolls. I imagend felicity's bright green eyes sinking into the grubby cement sea. Her body splattered with mud. I had already lost her.
Tears stinging in my eyes, I felt my way up the remaining steps. Only 12 to go. 11. 10. 9. 8. 7.
Suddenly, a huge crashing wave of water smashed me against the stairs jagged railing. My arm flew out from it's tight clutch at my waist. I watched in horror as the screaming wave of gray water engulfed samantha and sarah, sending them into a tumbling mess down the stairs. I heard a scream. And then realized it was my own.
I reached my arm out hopelessly. They were gone forever, but I still tried, groping into the moist, gloomy air. I dropped my arm to my side. I realized how stupid it was, my dolls were gone, along with the wave that had vaporized at the bottom of the stairs. Cold water trickled around my toes. The chipped purple paint on my toenails glared sharply at me. "Look what you did" It said. "You let go of them. They drowned." I stared into the gloom, feeling a knot grow in my throat. My dolls. They were gone. I slid across the splintered wood railing and into a puddle of gray water. I covered my face with my right hand. I had lost them. Forever. Suddenly, I realized I could still feel the weight of something in under my left arm, firmly gripping to my side. It felt like.....
Moving my head cautiously, a dared my eyes to look at it. I gasped.
It was a doll.
And it was kanani.
