My opinion on the new american girl items!

Yesterday, American Girl came out with a load of doll sized products. While some of them are cute, I think they are very overpriced! :( In this blog post, I am going to share my opinion on all of the new products. Feel free to share your response in the comments section. And please do not be offended by anything I say. This is completley and utterly my personal opinion, I do not mind if you disagree. In fact, I would love to hear other opinions! Don't forget to comment below! :)

Caroline's Collection!

First of all, we have Caroline, her meet outfit, and her accessories. (I explained my opinion on Caroline in another blog post.) I can not believe that a doll+book+accessories now costs $124!
Next, we have her table and chairs set, along with her tableware. The table and chairs distinctly remind me of the old ones in Felicity's collection. (Pictured below)
See how similar they look! I am quite fond of both sets actually, though I must say I prefer felicity's. It is more realistic looking and I think has a very classy touch. Suprisingly, Felicity's table and chairs cost $98, and Caroline's set costs $140. If you add in the tableware set for caroline, it totals to $200!!! Wow.
This is Caroline's pet cat, inkpot. I think he is quite cute, however I question the choice of yellow eyes. I think hazel eyes or green eyes would have made him look less halloweeny.

Next, we have Caroline's bed. I think it is very simple and elegant, and I like it. However, I find that the color choice for the blanket is rather dull. Most of Caroline's collection is light blue or pink, and I wonder why american girl chose this light brown color for her bed.

This is Caroline's skiff. As I said in my other Caroline blog post, I think it is quite silly looking. And you know what is the silliest part? It is not suppoused to be placed in water! In the description of this product, American Girl stated that "Please Note: Doll and skiff should not be placed in water." I think this is a really strange choice on american girl's part. I mean, who is going to pay $175 for a plastic boat that cant float? At that point it is pretty much a bench with a sail.

This is Caroline's Holiday Gown. I like the gloves, but aside from that, I am not so sure.... This is just personal opinion, but I just don't think it is pretty.

This is Caroline's Winter coat and skating set. I think the coat and hat are absolutley darling, and the color is magnificent. I plan on purchasing this outfit if I can scrape together $52....

Wow, just look at Caroline's parlor set! It is really extrordinary, and as much as I love it, I can not bring myself to spend $300 for a piece of doll furniture.

This is Caroline's nightgown. In all honesty, I think it looks sort of funky. i dont really like the shape and I think it needs some sort of tightening at the waist.

Caroline's birthday dress is really pretty. But I must say, I am more interested in that fabulous hair-do!
This is Caroline's travel outfit and accessories. Aside from the whopping and utterly ridiculous price, I think it is very cute. She reminds me of a fairytale charecter, and I absolutley adore the hat and jacket.

Overall, I think Caroline has a sweet little collection. However,  I disagree with some choices american girl has made. If I were to remake the collection, I would do it differently. What do you guys think? Comment below or take this poll to share your opinion!

New My American Girl products
First of all, we have the dreamy nightstand set. It is very cute, and I would definetly buy it... if it was'nt $58!!! Thats like, the price of a human sized nightstand!

This is the casual chic outfit. I think it is cute, but not my style. I don't like the colors so much.

This is the winter fun outfit (maybe I said that wrong?) And I think it is cute. I don't particularly like it and I think it is horrendously overpriced, but it is still cute.

This is the puffball snowflake outfit (as we call it here at basilmentos productions) and I think it is very cute. However, the earmuffs on their own cost $10! If you really want doll sized earmuffs, hot glue pom-poms to a headband or pipe cleaner. Oh, and another thing. This outfit could be rather impractical. I mean, your doll would get lost in a snowstorm! ;)

This is the "winter chalet". I think it is one of the worst products AG has ever made. I can make one out of a cardboard box (tutorial coming this weekend) and yet they are charging $150 for it. It seats ONE DOLL, and she can not even lie down because there is not enough floor space. In doll world, this "winter chalet" is about the size of a bathtub. While it looks cute, it is completley usless to me, as only one doll can fit inside, and she can not even lie down.

This is the adorable snowboard outfit and accessories. It is so cute and realistic, and I love it. However, I already have a snowboard (though I do not have an outfit) so I probably will not be buying this product.

This is the 2 in 1 skating outfit. I think it is charming and elegant. American girl really gave a classy touch to this outfit. However, I am not actually interested in a skating set, so I will not be purchasing this.

This is the holiday baking set, and I think it is RIDICULOUS. I can sew a red apron in 10 minutes and I can buy a mini santa hat for .99 cents at the walmart. I can use clay to make a gingerbread house for my dolls. (And have lots of fun doing it!) yet american girl is charging $58 for this little set. If you ask me, it should be $18. (even though it probably only worth a dollar of fabric and plastic)

This is the purple holiday dress. I think it is very cute and refreshing, considering AG's holiday dresses have been red for the past few years.

This is the red holiday dress. I love the gathering at the top. However, I must say I am a bit tired of AG's red holiday dresses. I know they are classics, but I think I prefer the purple one.

This is the holiday accessory set. I guess it is fine, but for $32, all you are really getting is a plastic nutcracker toy, a little cropped jacket, a pretend braclet and two little peices of paper. I like the jacket a lot, but other than that, I think this set is kind of a dud.

Lastly we have the reindeer PJ's. I LOVE the pj bottoms and top, and I want them desperatley. But the ears?? I mean, what the heck?! They are hilarious, and seemingly pointless, but I actually think they would be a nice accessory to have around. My dolls would'nt neccessarily wear them with the PJ's, but they could wear them with halloween costumes or on christmas. What do you guys think? Comment below and share your opinion!

  1. Firstie! Loving the reindeer pjs, but I'm going to have to disagree with you on the winter chalet. I love the design, and with a couple of minor tweaks I think it would be great. Though I totally agree that the doll should be able to at least lie down, and for the price, I think it should be a lot more realistic. Another I've noticed is that it looks plastic and tacky, and more like a piece cheaper brands like our generation would sell for 15 bucks. With the holiday accessory set, I hate the jacket (black cropped, seriously??) and the nutcracker doll seems pointless to me, and the pieces of paper????!!!!!!! If already made a similar set with card, an old jacket and a loot bag toy. The red holiday outfit seems kind of tired and repetitive, and I don't really like the gathered top. I do like the shoes and headband though, and would appreciate a holiday accessories with shoes like

  2. that. I do not really like the purple holiday outfit either though. It kind of reminds me of Emily's holiday dress, and the shade of purple seems to dark and sullen for a holiday outfit.

    1. I still like american girl, because they make great dolls and some cute stuff for them too. However, I have seen a change in the quality and price of their items, and this frustrates me.

    2. It IS pretty frustrating how high the prices are. Because of how high they are, I have never gotten a doll from AG, and have always gotten My Generation's from Target. That makes me mad.:(

  6. I don't really want any of the new items. They are cute but they are way too much money. I'd rather save my money for a new doll and make my own doll clothes. Speaking of dolls (also overpriced...)I like caroline and I plan to read the books but won't be buying her. I do love her eye color though! Looking forward to Lost 2..Putting off homework to wait for it. (I do NOT want to study... Thanks for giving me a reason to stay on computer!) ; )

  8. Hi Anna!
I had saved up all my money (Jobs, chores, Etc.), and went to American Girl yesterday. Caroline was there. I had brought my Lanie doll and OMG TWINS! After a LOT of hesitation I purchased her. However I'm not sure if or if not I'll be keeping her. I bought her purple dress (Did you know the braided thing was part of the headband?!?!?) And her night gown. I *may* be taking her bback. But I at least want to look at her first. She is quite pretty but her dress well I find it ugly. What do you think I should do?
I also picked up the night stand (Really cute!), the tennis outfit, and a piar of store excluive pj's.
I'm not sure if I'm well satisified with my purchase, this is my first time. The purple dress in person looks like a Halloween whitchs costume without the hat! The chalet was cheaply made, and my Lanie doll wouldn't even stand in it!
I regret not getting Rebecca :/
    Your opinion? Please? :)

    1. Well, it sounds to me like you got the wrong doll. Maybe you should return her and get Rebecca instead? And it sounds like you are not into the purple dress either (unless of course you want it to be a halloween costume xD) maybe you should trade that in for something else too! Though you were unhappy with some purchases, I hope you had a wonderful time! :)

  9. I TOTALLY agree. That little cabin house is not even as tall as the doll! The doll's head practically touches the roof! And the same thing with the boat-too small.

And what is with the overpriced products?!?! I mean, come on. Do they really expect us to pay up to $30 for an OUTFIT?! I spend less on MY clothes!

And half of the furniture they sell now is plastic! JUST plastic! And all of it is sooo ghastly expensive that even a family like mine (we are pretty well off) can't afford any of it!

That's it. I'm complaining to AG. Maybe I'll even film it...=/

  10. Hey! I really like the Caroline doll, but I can't find myself to like all of her stuff! Going back to the boat, the description said it was made with "real wood"! Have you looked at that thing!???!?!?!??!?!?!? It looks like a piece of plastic!!!!!!! Ugh......! The parlor is adorable, but I don't think I would give my whole Christmas (and b-day?) for it!I I think Inkpot is cute, but your right on the yellow eyes! When I was little I had a cat that looked like Inkpot, and it was SO MEAN!!!!!!!!!!! Her outfits are overpriced, and I don't think I can talk myself into purchasing them!
All the new MAG OR JLY Outfits, all arer to wintery & overpriced, because it RARELY snows in Mississippi, and it wouldn't work that hot in a AGPS, when the suns shinin'! I kinda like and don't like the "winter chalet", because he way I look at doll stuff is, "Hmmm? My doll is almost larger than Kit's cookstove. Would a "ten year old girl" really be taller than her cookstove, stove or oven thing?"
I'm done ranting, and I have a question! Should I start sewing my own doll clothes? I really want to, but just not sure if I can handle it? Kk? I'm 11, and can be a little ditzy sometimes! If you think I should where do I start?
    P.S. I f you reply, I'm gonna FREAK OUT!!!!!!!!!!!

    3. Yes! Think to yourself:

Would I want to hang by a fire in a cabin where my head touches the roof, i can only fit in there, i cannot lay down,
and it's maybe 1/2 the size of a suitable doll house!

      Delete
  11. I totally agree Anna!! I mean like who's gonna pay $150 JUST for a doll chalet that's almost BARBIE sized! I mean like Come on AG A doll can hardly FIT in it! It's really cute, but WELL overpriced, I would pay $10 for it but NOT $150!! Oh and DON'T even get me started about that sail boat!! It's THE SIZE OF A DOLL BATHTUB and it doesn't even FLOAT! What's the point of getting a plastic doll bathtub sized doll sailboat THAT DOESN'T EVEN FLOAT! And I totally agree! Caroline's table and chairs set looks almost EXACTLY like Felicity's! I really like it, but AG needs to come up with some new ideas. -_-
Anna, if you HAD to chose one thing on that list of new things, what would it be?? Just wondering!

  12. I was looking on the AG site a few days ago because I heard there would be new stuff. I was thrilled when I saw the purple dress and knew I would buy it. It is $36 but it's one of my favourites. when I saw the skating outfit I was in love! I'm a skater as well as one of my dolls. Then I saw the price. Most 2 in ones are $34 which is quite pricey but normal for AG. then I saw the price.

    OH

    MY

    GOSH!!!!!!!

    $48????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
that's pretty much half the price of the doll! Just because there is some extra plastic on the shoe to make the blade does NOT mean AG should make us cough up pretty much $50!

Sorry for the length of this comment BTW, but I do have to agree with you on caroline's night gown. I think it looks like a rolled up piece of paper with some ribbon glued on to it.

I do like the pink coat, but I think it should of come with a hat, gloves, and leggings.

DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE BEDSIDE TABLE!!!!!

  15. AG is so expensive now, It is worth $10 per an outfit to me. The doll is cute but I have a lot of blondes. I LOVE there NEW doll craft kit called "Doll Star"! So CUTE!!!!!! I want it so bad. It is all how to make this and that.... ect. I really planned to buy and think they should half the price though. I think there talk show set that comes in that book is so CUTE!!!!!! I hate the J.L.Y. (M.A.G.) outfits so much. I love Carolines travel outfit! What did american girl do?!?! AG should really make some better outfits.... The name for that causal chic outfit is not good for small girls. Does AG want little girls to say Chic everywhere? I would not! I want AG to make a doll like Samatha! Overall.... I really think AG should lower the price and make the outfits more cute (like not all crazy)!

You could even make one like that for like 15$ I don't understand what American Girl is doing.. They are coming out with dolls that look a like, I am really wondering what 2013 girl of the year will look like.. I really think that they should have more red head dolls:) So anyways, I hope american girls prices will go down.. I couldn't imagine if the doll and book costed 130$ in the future.. It has inspired me to made one for my doll out of a shoebox, fabric, string and wooden dowels. I'll send you a picture to your fan mail if I make it. Oh and do you have a PO box because I am making a basilmentos doll clothing line with my birthday fabric and I would love to send you something. Do you have etsy? 19. i totally agree. AG has gone downhill since 2011. Kanani was so unique but then Mckenna came out and she wasn't so unique. then Caroline comes out looking like barbie. i think i am getting Caroline but only for her outfit but i still want to keep her. the boat they call "Wooden" is plastic and i asked my grandma and she bought dolls for my aunts and she agreed with me. AG really needs to start being as great as they can be again. plus, the parlor is way expensive. all it is is a fold out doll house! i could probably make on of those from wood or cardboard and at the most it would cost me 20 dollars. AG needs to get a little more creative, i agree with you Anna.

  20. I agree with every single thing you just wrote in that post.. I have been a fan of American Girl for a long time. A loooonnggg time.. Since 1999, actually. And I remember the outfits they used to sell.. So well made, so thought out.. And even though they were expensive (at the time, nothing like today's expensive) Everything was SO worth the money. And today.. The quality has officially taken a turn for the worst.

I don't personally plan on purchasing anything from Caroline's set, just because everything is really expensive. I think Caroline is pretty cute, and I love her eye color, but a ton of her items are copied off of Felicity.. Felicity must be pretty offended right now.. xD The only thing in her set that I would be thinking of getting is her winter coat and skating set. Because I just think it is adorable. But then again... $60?! That's almost as expensive as the dolls used to be. (They used to be $85.. :|) And then on to the my american girl stuff.. Everything new.. Looks.. Just CHEAP. With a few exceptions. (like the purple christmas dress and the snowboarding outfit that I love!) And I agree about the cabin and the holiday baking set. That apron can be made in 5 minutes, and the gingerbread house does not even look that useful.. You would use it for one day a year and then POOF. In the back of your closet.. For again.. $60.

And I can't wait for your tutorial on a cabin! That would be so useful for some holiday videos, don't you think? :) You are so crafty Anna, I admire your stand against American Girl's high prices. :D

Hmmm.. Between team American Girl and team Anna...
There's no question about it.. TEAM ANNA! :D

    1. Thanks for the awesome comment! I got my felicity doll way back in 2002 and I loved American Girl even before that. When I look back at my old doll clothes and accesories, the quality is equisite. The newer products contain more plastic and are now made in china instead of sweden (? Is that where they used to be made ?) and the quality is generally lower.
I love the blue coat set so much!!! while it reminds me of samanthas coat (retired) I think it is beautiful and I love the color. It reminds me of american girl's old style.
I am dissapointed in some recent products from american girl, but when it really comes down to it, I like them. I mean, they created AG dolls after all! xD

  23. These prices are absolutely ridiculous. Seriously? $32 for that tiny jacket set? I am surprised anyone even bought Julies car set. If people want doll furniture, they should just go to Target for actual cheep stuff. I am so sick of American Girl rising there prices, and even worst, getting away with it! The first time I ever bought an AG doll was when I was seven. The doll with the accessories was only $84. Now I am 13 and there $124?! I have an idea to stop this......our at least help. I think it would be a good idea if you wrote a letter about all these problems to AG, and before sending it to them you could put it on your blog. Like....$34 for an outfit that is just a shirt, pants, shoes, and hat?

They used to sell 2 in 1 outfits for $30!!!

And the furniture is going WAYYYY down in quality :/

    But great blogpost!(:

  28. I agree with caroline pj's it just looks kinda silly.
And I don't think i would wear reindeer antlers to bed(unless it is christmas eve).

I think AG is going way down on quality
    and
    WAY up in prices.

You can buy an Our Generation Car (Though i'm not sure about there quality in the car and AG's honks and everything) but you can buy our generation's car for $40 at wal-mart. AG's costs $300!!!!

however they do have cute stuff, but again, i'm not sure about quality. There was an outfit I wanted sooo bad (and still do) And when we went to the AGP I saw I and I was surprised at the quality. I think AG needs to make their standards higher. And for the quality they're giving, their prices lower.

  39. With the Holiday Accesories Set, I saw a mini Nutcracker at Walmart for around $3, Springfield has a sweater a lot like that in a set for around $4 with a coupon, I could easily make a bracelet like that, and anyone could print out 2 pieces of paper. Totally a dud. I do have to disagree with you on Caroline, though. I have her, and her hair is really pretty. Her eyes are totally unique.
I must admit, though, her dress is rather Barbieish. I just love that purple holiday dress!

  40. I really like the purple holiday dress, but I can't see why people are making a big deal about it. Every year AG (at least for the past few years) makes a red dress and a different color dress or outfit. Last year AG had the red lace dress and the blue and sliver outfit. And so on. Maybe its just that I have't been collecting AG stuff vary long...

  41. I'm hoping I get the Holiday Baking Set for Christmas. The reindeer pj's, nightstand, the two dresses and the 2-in-1 ice skating outfit's are SUPER CUTE! As for Caroline, her eyes are the only thing I like about her. She's a Lanie look alike in my opinion. Caroline's holiday outfit, her bed and her travel outfit(NOT including the spencer, it makes her look like a football player) with the basket are the only item's I'd purchase. AG needs more ORIGINAL dolls.

  42. I'm so sad right now that I missed the chance to get the 2012 holiday dress, it's probably my all time fave! I haven't seen it on eBay yet and I bet it will be even more overpriced when I find it ... Collectors and AG are just making each other higher the prices crazily! Is it even gonna end ..?

The story behind it all....

In September of 2009, a pre-teen girl named Anna was searching youtube. She no longer used her american girl dolls. they were behind the closet doors, gathering dust. She reluctantly glanced over, then began to type in the search bar: American Girl Dolls. A video came up. She clicked on it. 14 coustumed dolls slid onto the screen and began to dance together, waving their arms and doing cartwheels. Anna was shocked. How could this be possible? This was.... Amazing. She quickly searched a few more. There were hudreds of videos, by usernames like stephenswodadancer, AGlovejess and girloftheyearstudios. Anna couldn't believe it. This new discovery was incredible! She ran to her room and pulled out her two dolls, felicity and samantha. She grabbed her camera. And, she began to film.

It is now four years later. I work on videos almost everyday, usually stopmotions. I have gathered quite a few veiws and subscribers on youtube, and I really appriciate when people comment on my videos. I have come unbelievibly far, but I still leave up those first videos from two years ago, because for me, those are the memories that I will always treasure. I am so happy that I can share them with you.
